Engineering at King's – our plans for the future
As part of the King’s ambition to be among the world’s truly great universities, we are planning to expand our Engineering activity at King’s in both teaching and research. These plans are centred on the launch of a new additional undergraduate engineering programme with a 21st Century perspective. Currently, we offer undergraduate programmes in Electronic Engineering (and variants) in the Department of Informatics and Biomedical Engineering in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, but we plan to launch a new General Engineering programme.

Our approach to teaching engineering aims to be distinctive, combining both traditional teaching methods with modern, project-based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work. A key focus will be on innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as on ensuring relevance to industry and commerce, and these will be an important part of our students’ experience. Our ambition is to provide cohorts of graduates equipped to deal with real world challenges, in traditional industries, in the tech sectors, in business and in government.
Engineering research at King’s currently focusses on robotics, telecommunications and biomedical engineering. Our aim is to strengthen our existing research activities but also to establish new research themes, building on the strength and complementarity across King’s more generally, including the obvious opportunities in science and health, but also in relation to management & business, security, digital humanities and more. You can find out more about our current research at King’s on the Informatics and Biomedical Engineering pages.

In short, our aim in developing our Engineering activities is to undertake world-leading research that will also generate direct real-world impact and make a fundamental difference through our students and our staff. For now, our robotics and telecommunications research and Electronic Engineering education remains part of the Department of Informatics. However, we expect that in time, Computer Science and Engineering will divide into two separate organisational entities once we increase our critical mass.
To support our ambition we are investing £49 million in new teaching and research laboratory space in the Quad Building at the heart of the Strand campus to provide our students and staff with facilities fit for a world-leading university.
