Professor Coolen completed his MSc in Theoretical Physics in 1987 and obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics/Biophysics, both at the University of Utrecht in 1990, after which he was appointed to the post of Research Assistant at the same university from 1990-91, and at the University of Oxford from 1991-95.  He joined the Mathematics Department at King’s College London in 1995 as a Reader in Mathematics, and was promoted to Professor in 2000.

He is a member of the IOP (Institute of Physics), the LMS (London Mathematical Society) and the EPSRC College.  He is an advisory board member of Journal of Physics A, a Fellow of the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and honorary Professor at UCL's Cancer Institute.

  • Statistical mechanics of disordered many-particle systems
  • Processes on complex networks and random graphs
  • Mathematical bio-medicine.
