Dr Lavis was appointed a lecturer in Mathematics at UMIST in 1964 and moved to Chelsea College London in 1967, where he was appointed a Senior Lecturer in 1983. Following the merger with King's he continued as a Senior Lecturer until his retirement in 2004 when he was appointed a Visiting Senior Research Fellow. In 2014 he became a Research Associate at the Centre for the Philosophy of Natural and Social Science, London School of Economics, and in 2016 he was made an Emeritus Senior Lecturer at King's.
Dr Lavis has held leave Appointments at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda (1969-71), Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France (1978-79), University of Waterloo, Canada (1985) and University of Manitoba, Canada (1997).
