MathSoc: Student Society
“MathSoc” is the official King’s College London mathematical society. Our aim is to promote the study and application of mathematics in general, and to foster an academically supportive environment for KCL mathematics students.
We routinely host an eclectic range of external speakers, from both academia and industry, and across a variety of branches of pure and applied mathematics.
In addition to frequent careers talks we also host networking events and student-run presentations, workshops, discussion groups and debate sessions. We regularly organise departmental “Pizza and Wine” evenings, allowing academics from the research groups to meet with undergraduates and discuss their work.
Our intensive programming workshops are very popular, intended to get you up to speed at coding with Mathematica, LaTeX, Haskell, Python, and more. Whether you’re interested in cryptanalysis or combinatorics, quantitative analysis or quantum field theory, you’re guaranteed to find something to whet your intellectual appetite.
On the lighter side, we also hold mathematical movie nights, cocktail socials, formal dinners, pub crawls, board-game sessions, and even a weekly puzzle competition - with prizes! We are introducing our own termly magazine (written, edited and published entirely by KCL students), primarily intended to feature short and informal expositions of exciting areas of mathematics that lie outside of the conventional curriculum, in addition to a tantalising problem corner and a collection of mathematical book and movie reviews.
MathSoc also co-organise a widely-acclaimed annual trip to the beautiful 17th-century Cumberland Lodge, situated in the heart of the Windsor countryside, and a black-tie end-of-year boat party, open to the entire NMS faculty, held at sunset on the Thames.
All undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Mathematics are automatically members of MathSoc, and students from other departments and faculties are welcome to attend our full calendar of academic, social and networking events.
If you’d like to learn more, you can visit our website at http://www.mathsoc.co.uk, or send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
KCL MathSoc will kick off the academic year with a warm welcome to all new Mathematicians at the Meet & Greet event during Fresher’s week.
The current MathSoc committee can be contacted via email (firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com).
