Graduate Research Students

Here you will find specific information about Departmental processes and general ‘housekeeping’ for Postgraduate research students. This should be read in conjunction with the Faculty PGR Handbook and myhandbook. If you have any queries during your time with us, your first point of contact is the Postgraduate Programme Administrator.

General Arrangements and Useful Links

You must maintain regular contact with your supervisor and make satisfactory progress, as judged by the Head of Department. The minimum period of study for a PhD is two years full-time, four years part-time. It is expected that full-time students will undertake a full working week on their MPhil/PhD; part time students the equivalent of 16 hours per week. You may be required to attend specified courses and all students are expected to attend relevant transferable skills training.

Research students should agree their holiday periods, between a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of eight weeks per year inclusive of public holidays and college closure dates, with their supervisor. Students receiving industrial sponsorship are expected to bear in mind their obligations to the sponsor in planning leave.

Excessive absences can be reported to the Faculty via normal progress report procedures.

Desks will be allocated to all full time research students in one of our PhD offices.

Computer equipment is usually supplied by the Department. Research students are contacted about their IT needs at the beginning of their studies.

Personal and internal mail will be held in the Departmental Office, S5.01. If you are employed as a tutor for undergraduate courses, homework and messages from lecturers will be left for you in the pigeon holes outside rooms S5.20 and S5.17.

Stationery is available from the Departmental Office. This includes notepads, refill pads, pens, markers, folders etc. If you require something specific, please ask the Departmental Officer whether it can be ordered in for you.

The NMS Staff Common Room (S5.21) is also available for use by research students.
