Changing Your Programme of Study
Step 1: Discuss your Options
If you are considering a change of programme please speak to your Programme Director and/or Personal Tutor in the first instance.
Step 2: Gain Approval
For first year undergraduates any requests to change programme are considered by the UG Admissions Tutor until the end of reading week in the first semester. Any requests after that time will go to the Senior Tutor.
For postgraduate students your programme director will approve the transfer.
Please note that approval of requests to change programme is not automatic. In particular, we cannot guarantee a place on an alternative programme even if it is housed within the department.
Please note that you will have to satisfy the requirements of the programme you change to; this can mean taking missed modules (for additional credit) alongside your regular modules, or taking an extra year to catch up on the missed modules.
This means that it can be very difficult to transfer programmes any later than the end of the first year - the sooner the decision the better.
This process is the same whether you want to change programmes within the maths department or to a programme in a different department. For programmes from a different department you also need to gain approval from the relevant programme organiser in the other department.
Please note that all international students need to speak to the Visa Compliance team when changing programme to check for any implications on their visa status
Step 3: Complete the Application Online
In order to change programme you will need to complete the online "Student Change of Circumstances" form which is available via Student Records.
Further details can be found on the Registry Services webpages:
Changing Between BSc and MSci
There is no particular deadline for changing between BSc and MSci in your first and second year.
If you wish to change from your BSc programme to the MSci programme in your third year, the deadline for informing the department of your request is the end of reading week in semester one.
If you wish to change from the MSci programme to the BSc programme in your third year you can do this as late as after the May exams. Please note that leaving the change to such a late date will affect your graduation dates.
Changing to single honours Maths from a joint programme
Students studying the BSc Maths with Management and Finance programme, , who started before 2018/19, are allowed to transfer to the single honours Maths programme or the joint honours Maths with Statistics programme after the first semester of the first year or at the end of the first year of study.
Credit from management modules taken in the first semester or first year will still count towards the final degree classification. Any modules missed from the single honours programme can be taken as optional extra credit in the second year.
Students studying the BSc Maths with Statistics programme, who started before 2018/19, can transfer to BSc Maths at the end of the second year without having taken 5CCM231A in year two or having any obligation to take 6CCM231B in the third year.
Students studying the BSc Maths with Statistics programme, who started in 2018/19 or afterwards, can transfer to BSc Maths at the end of the second year if all compulsory modules for the BSc Maths programme have been taken.
