Students on the above mentioned programmes have the opportunity to spend an extra year, between their second and third years, at an overseas university. MSci students have the option of studying abroad between their second and third years, or between their third and fourth years.  This year will not count towards the final degree classification - so it will not affect whether you get a 2:1 or a 1st - but will change your degree title to include "with a year abroad".  For example from “BSc Mathematics” to "BSc Mathematics with a Year Abroad".

Please note that students must complete the appropriate number of years of study at King’s in order to receive their degree: to receive a BSc 3 years must be completed at King’s (not including the year abroad) and to receive an MSci 4 years must be completed at King’s (not including the year abroad).

Students currently have the opportunity to study abroad at one of five destinations:

  • Hong Kong University
  • National University of Singapore
  • University of California
  • University of Chicago
  • University of North Carolina
  • McGill University

Acceptance on the year abroad depends on:

  • Acceptance by the Study Abroad office
  • Acceptance by the Department of Mathematics
  • Acceptance from the overseas institution

Please note that meeting the requirements from the Study Abroad Office and the Department of Mathematics does not guarantee that you will be accepted by the host institution.  Due to this possibility you should always complete your 3rd year module selections in Semester 2.

The requirements from the Department of Mathematics are as follows:

  • 210 credits passed
  • An overall average mark of 60% or more
  • No mark below 33% by the end of the second year.

Students who are interested in studying abroad should:

  1. Contact the Study Abroad Office to make an application for a year abroad in the normal manner.
  2. Contact the department's Study Abroad tutor to discuss further options, if needed. All module choices at the host institution must be approved by the Study Abroad Tutor.
  3. Once you have been accepted by the Study Abroad office, the host institution and by the Department then you will be formally transferred to the new programme.  This will normally be confirmed in early July.  Please wait for confirmation before making any travel plans.

Students will be deemed to have passed the period abroad when they have achieved an overall weighted average across all modules equal to or greater than the host institution’s pass mark. If this is achieved students will receive 120 credits to signify their year abraod.  Students who go to a University requiring them to take 135 credits will be assessed on their best 120 credits.

Students who do not pass the year abroad will be transferred onto year 3 of their original programme.

For further information please see the Study Abroad webpages or speak to your Programme Administrator.
