Dr Gowsihan Poologasundarampillai

Reader in Biomaterials Science

Biography

Dr. Gowsihan (Gowsh) Poologasundarampillai is a Reader in Biomaterials Science at King’s College London (Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences) and an Honorary Associate Professor in Biomaterials and Biomanufacturing at the University of Birmingham. A uniquely versatile deep-tech innovator, his career spans the full pipeline of academic discovery, advanced manufacturing, and commercial translation.

His research focuses on the design of advanced materials, pioneering manufacturing processes, and cutting-edge imaging technologies. Specifically, his group leads the development of novel molecules, organic-inorganic hybrids, and 1D, 2D, and 3D bioactive scaffolds. Demonstrating remarkable scientific adaptability, his fundamental research has successfully pivoted across highly diverse applications—ranging from the fabrication of artificial blood vessel mimics to the engineering of advanced materials for neutron capture.

Crucially, Dr. Poologasundarampillai specializes in translating nanoscale structural assembly into continuous macroscopic manufacturing. His team possesses deep expertise in biomaterial fabrication, microfluidic reactor design, and executing highly complex, concurrent Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) engineering cycles. To validate these manufacturing breakthroughs, he is highly experienced in the advanced, multimodal characterisation of materials, frequently deploying high-throughput structural imaging (e.g., synchrotron X-ray, volumetric EM) at key UK and EU National Facilities.

Beyond the laboratory, Dr. Poologasundarampillai is a proven entrepreneur dedicated to accelerating sovereign, pilot-scale manufacturing. He is the Co-Founder and CTO of Aegis Fibretech Ltd (targeting advanced materials and shielding), and the recently established Founder of Biowool Regen Ltd (focusing on tissue regenerative medicine)—both spin-out companies from the University of Birmingham. His commercial leadership encompasses establishing industrial Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), managing complex IP portfolios, and bridging the "valley of death" between academic metrology and industrial scale-out.

He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, delivered more than 50 conference presentations, and continuously leads multidisciplinary teams operating at the intersection of material science, cell biology, automated image processing, and commercialization.
