João Silvestre studied Classics and Portuguese at the University of Aveiro, where he obtained his PhD in Linguistics. He wrote his thesis on the early modern Portuguese lexicography (18th century) focusing on the crosslinguistic contact.

He developed his post-doctoral research at the University of Lisbon on the history of Portuguese linguistics, where he also taught lexicology, morphology and lexicography. His previous teaching position was at the University of Aveiro.

Research Interests

  • Lexicology, lexicography, corpus linguistics;
  • History of Portuguese language, historical linguistics;
  • Linguistic historiography.
  • Ongoing projects: "Lexicographic Corpus of Portuguese" (Portuguese dictionaries – 15th-18th centuries), "Dicionário de Regionalismos e Arcaísmos" (dictionary of archaic and dialectal words)
