I am the Laboratory Support Assistant at the SGDP Centre’s Molecular Genetics Lab and joined the team in April 2018.
My primary role is to help ensure the smooth running of the labs through routine monitoring of equipment and infrastructure, run all aspects of the busy laboratory storeroom as well as be a point of contact for researchers using the labs.
Other responsibilities also include preparing for internal and external lab inspections, and maintaining, managing and developing lab recycling and sustainability initiatives.
My areas of expertise include health and safety compliance and have recently completed IOSH Managing Safely course with the British Safety Council.
Expertise and Public Engagement:
I have taken part in several external public engagement/awareness of science activities including New Scientist Live (2018), and regularly attend primary schools to talk to them about DNA and demonstrate DNA extraction of a strawberry!
We also have regular lab tours where we take a journey through the labs to show them methods used by our researchers, explain basic molecular genetics and demonstrate equipment.
