Biography

Shanmugapriya (Priya) Umachandran is a Wellcome Trust funded PhD student in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine.

Priya completed a MSc in Medicine, Science and Society at King's in 2014, and also has a BA in Physiology, Psychology and Philosophy from Jesus College, University of Oxford. Prior to this, she worked as an exhibition researcher and content developer for the Science Museum and in health and science policy at the Wellcome Trust and the London Health Board.

Research

Thesis title: ''Brain Policy’ now? Relationships between the neurosciences and contemporary policymaking in the United Kingdom'

Priya's research project focuses on the ways in which research into the brain, specifically neuroscience, is changing public policy in the UK. It looks at ‘nudges’ and also other ways neuroscience interacts with policy in its widest sense – from the work of central government to charities and think tanks  – as well as changes to conceptions of the role of governments and citizens.
