Biography
Zhuo Huang completed her Bachelor’s degree in Stomatology at Wuhan University and her Master’s degree in Dental Prosthodontics at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. During her postgraduate research she worked on biomaterials-based approaches for oral disease and tissue repair.
She began her PhD at King’s College London in October 2025 under the supervision of Professor Guy Carpenter and Dr David Burke in the Salivary Research Lab in the Centre for Host–Microbiome Interactions. Her research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of salivary lubrication and the role of mucins in maintaining oral surface hydration. In particular, her project investigates ion–mucin interactions and the design of short peptides, combining computational and experimental approaches to restore lubrication in conditions such as xerostomia.
Research

Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions
Millions of microorganisms live in and on our bodies forming microbiomes on different surfaces. Researchers in the Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions study our relationship with these bacteria and fungi in health or in oral and systemic diseases such as periodontitis, candidiasis, oral cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
