The Department of Philosophy at King’s is one of the largest and most distinctive in the country.

We have strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, and moral and political philosophy. We were ranked 3rd in the UK, and 1st in London, for both quality and power according to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rankings.

The Department's research excellence is demonstrated and supported by our success in securing research grants and donations from both public and private bodies. These include the award of a £1.95 million grant in 2009 from the Wellcome Trust to establish the King’s Centre for Humanities and Health as well as a £1.4 million donation from the Sowerby Foundation to fund a Chair in Philosophy and Medicine in 2013.

We have thriving graduate community which is one of the most distinctive and outstanding features of the research culture of Philosophy at King’s. Together with the School of Advanced Studies and UCL, King’s is part of the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) which funds around 400 postgraduate studentships over five annual cohorts, from October 2014.

Our major international research partnerships in philosophy are with UNC, Cornell, NUS and the Humboldt University but we also have strong links with other universities in Europe, the USA and East Asia.

Research Centre

CPVA Logo SquareThe Centre for Philosophy and the Visual Arts (CPVA) is a major multi-disciplinary initiative based at King’s College London. Its aim is to bring together academics, artists, curators and gallerists to explore the connections between philosophy, theory and the visual arts. The current Directors of the Centre are Harald den Breejen and Dr. Sacha Golob.

CPVA works primarily with galleries, from major public institutions to smaller specialist venues, and with curators and individual artists interested in philosophy and theory. For information on events, including artists' residencies, or to discuss a possible collaboration, please see our main website or email us
