Asian Security & Warfare Research Group

East Asia is at the centre of a major military transformation. State actors are modernizing their arsenals, changing defense and security priorities, developing new strategies to engage with domestic and international audiences. As these states review the use of military power as a tool of statecraft, an in-depth understanding of how national dynamics affect regional interactions is central to the study of regional security.

The Asian Security & Warfare Research Group (ASWRG) is the prime forum of intellectual exchange and debate for scholars, practitioners, and researchers interested in one of the most dynamic regions of the world. The group promotes a multidisciplinary approach to the understanding of the military history, strategic thinking, defence and security policies of state actors in an area that stretches from the Indian Ocean to the Sea of Japan, from Mongolia to Australia.  

Drawing upon the expertise of a wide network of academic and practitioners, the ASWRG combines academic research exploring national specificities in relation to defense and security matters to its implication for policy-making.

The ASWRG promotes individual and team-led research projects and hosts seminars, workshops, and conferences. It also supports the teaching of different aspects of East Asian security from undergraduate to post-doctoral research.

Japan-NATO Partnership

In 2007, Abe Shinzo became Japan’s first Prime Minister (PM) to address NATO’s North Atlantic Council. In 2013, Japan and NATO signed a Joint Political Declaration, and in 2014, adopted the Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme (IPCP), the framework of implementation for the cooperation.
