Bridging the Gap between School and University


The first of its kind for the College, the GTA Enhancing Education Fund provided a unique opportunity for postgraduate researchers (PGR), who have experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at King’s College London, to lead the design of a course or skill-specific engagement activity for students, in collaboration with module convenors. Seven projects have been funded, including Kristina Arakelyan, Susannah Knight and Rhys Sparey's Bridging the Gap between School and University


Bridging the Gap between School and University is a project to help first-year undergraduate students settle into the Department of Music, by helping them develop basic skills needed for both theory and essay-based courses. Co-designed by doctoral researchers in the department, with help from lecturers of first-year undergraduate modules, this will be a one-stop-shop resource for the students, providing them with support and helping them feel connected as they start this new journey.

Kristina Arakelyan

Kristina Arakelyan is an award-winning composer, pianist and educator, and doctoral researcher at King's College London, specialising in music composition. Kristina teaches in several educational settings, including as a GTA in the Department of Music and as a GTA Development Programme Associate at King's Academy; and composition and theory tutor at the Junior Royal Academy of Music.

Susannah Knights

Susannah Knights is in her 4th year of a LAHP-funded PhD at King’s. Her research looks at the role of musical listening in organising post-revolutionary society in the city of Tunis. Susannah has taught with several educational projects including the ‘Widening Participation in Music’ project at St George’s, Southwark, and the Brilliant Club charity.

Rhys Sparey

Rhys Sparey is a musician and cultural historian of the Arabian Sea, focusing on technology and worship in Islam. His doctoral research examines the recalibration of arts and rites pertaining to the Hijri month of Muharram to digital media during the Covid-19 pandemic. He has also published and presented work on Kurdish electronic dance music, nuha and marsiya poetry, and multilingual pedagogy. Rhys teaches at a primary, secondary, and tertiary level in both Arabic and English classroom contexts, including various modules at King’s College London in the Department of Music and the Department of War Studies.
