Investigating Innovative Dental Care Models: Utilising Dental Team Skill Mix to Enhance Oral Health
Dental nurses are the largest professional group within the UK dental workforce, yet their skills may not always be fully utilised. We are interested in better understanding dental nurses’ skills, working experiences and future career intentions.
The study aims to investigate the current profile and working experiences of dental nurses across the United Kingdom and explore how dental nurses and other members of the dental team could work to their full scope of practice within innovative model(s) of dental care.
Study Design
This is a sequential mixed-methods study involving:
- A UK-wide survey of registered dental nurses.
- Interviews with dental nurses.
Impact
Better use of skill mix could help dental services increase capacity, improve access to care and make more effective use of the skills available within the dental workforce. Supporting dental nurses to use their full scope of practice may also improve job satisfaction, and workforce retention. The study will provide evidence to support the development of more sustainable and patient-centred dental care workforce model(s).
