REF 2014 Results

King's achieved excellent results in REF 2014, confirming the College's position as a world-leading university. 

Some of the key data is highlighted below:

  • On Quality1 rankings, King's improved from 22nd in RAE 2008, to 7th in REF 2014. 
  • On Power2 rankings (weighted quality multiplied by the size of the submission), King's improved from 11th in RAE 2008 to 6th in REF 2014.
  • On Impact, King's ranked 4th amongst multi-faculty universities.
  • 71% of King's submitted staff were in Units of Assessment with a top decile ranking.
  • 92% of King's submitted staff were in Units of Assessment with a top quartile ranking.
  • 40% of the overall work submitted was considered 4* (world leading)

Achievements by individual Units of Assessment:

  • Law is 1st in the country for quality of research and 7th for power (up from 19th and 14th respectively);
  • Education is 2nd for quality and 4th for power;
  • Clinical Medicine is 3rd for quality;
  • General Engineering (Imaging Sciences) is 5th for quality and submitted twice the number of staff compared with 2008;
  • Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience is 2nd in the country for power and achieved 100 percent 4* ranking for research ‘environment’;
  • Politics and International Studies is 1st for power*;
  • History is 5th for quality and 7th for power;
  • Philosophy is 3rd for quality and 3rd for power;
  • Communication, Cultural and Media Studies (Culture, Media and Creative Industries and Digital Humanities) are 1st for power and 8th for quality and scored 100% at 4* for research ‘environment’.

1 Quality is calculated by multiplying the percentage of activity at each star level by the star ranking (e.g. % of activity at 4* x 4) to obtain a grade point average. 2 The Power score takes into account both the quality and the quantity of research activity, with a weighting applied only to research at 4* and 3*.
