The Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Briefing Book is a reference guide containing a wide selection of documents related to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its review process. It is widely used by national delegations as well as members of the civil society as part of their preparation for NPT meetings.

The Briefing Book represents a ‘living document’ that has been regularly updated since the early 1990s. All editions are available to download below:

Aims

The Briefing Book was first published in 1990 by Professor John Simpson and Ben Sanders under the auspices of the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies at the University of Southampton. In 2012, it found a new home in the Centre for Science and Security Studies (CSSS) at King’s College London and is currently produced in partnership with the James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Studies.

  • The first part contains an introduction to nuclear weapons and nuclear energy as well as a brief history of the NPT and significant milestones in the NPT Review Process.
  • The second part includes the texts of relevant documentation related to the NPT review process including updates on the United Nations, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), CD and other multilateral arms control machinery as well as international developments relevant to the NPT review process.
