King's Research & Researchers Function provides comprehensive and wide-ranging professional support throughout the lifecycle of a research project from strategic bid development to impact and innovation activity.

Led by Operations Director Dr Martin Kirk, and made up of staff embedded in our faculties and schools as well as dedicated central teams, we aim to provide the best environment, support and networks for our community, from postgraduate research students to senior academics.

The Research Management & Innovation Directorate comprises central functions in the following areas: research development, research policy, research students and research staff development, research ethics and integrity, research information systems, award management, contract negotiation, enterprise support, knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer partnerships, consultancy services, intellectual property management, clinical trials management, audit and compliance.

Our Director and Area Leads

Dr Martin Kirk, Operations Director (Research & Researchers)

Martin leads the Research & Researcher function and has operational responsibility for the Research Management and Innovation Directorate (RMID). He joined King's in 2018, from University of British Columbia (UBC) where he has been Director, Office of Research Services since 2007. Prior to joining UBC, Martin held research leadership positions, covering both academic and professional aspects, at University of Calgary, and prior to that in industry. He is a chemist by discipline with a BSc from Heriot-Watt and a PhD from Calgary.

Dr Tom Foulkes, Research Strategy & Development Lead

Tom is Director of Research Strategy and Development. Following a first degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge, he worked at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, before undertaking a PhD in neuroscience at UCL. After a short post-doctoral position, he joined the Medical Research Council as Programme Manager, working on a variety of areas before moving to King’s in 2013 as Director of Research Development (Health). He was appointed to his current role in July 2015.

Mr Paul Labbett, Grant and Contract Delivery Lead

Paul is Director of Research Grants & Contracts and heads the office responsible for all aspects of administering the university’s portfolio of research projects, and protecting its intellectual assets when engaging in externally-supported research.

Dr Mike Shaw, Operational Services Lead

Mike is Director of IP & Licensing, heading up the team responsible for all aspects of management and commercialisation of King’s’ Intellectual Property portfolio, including the development of new spin-out company opportunities and the licensing of IP to existing companies.

Dr Nigel Eady, Research Talent Lead

Nigel is Director of Research Talent at King’s College London. He provides strategic and operational oversight of the Centre for Doctoral Studies, which equips research students to excel, and the Centre for Research Staff Development, which provides support to enable research staff to fulfil their potential.
