We are inviting adults aged 30-70 years to take part in an exciting research study exploring how plant foods influence gut and cardiometabolic health.

What’s involved?

  • 3 in-person visits to King’s College London (Waterloo campus) over 5 weeks
  • Consuming only meals provided by the study for six days a week, 4 weeks
  • Providing two blood, urine, and stool samples
  • A non-invasive ultrasound of the artery in your arm
  • Questionnaires on bowel habits, gut symptoms, mental well-being, and food intake

You will:

  • Be reimbursed with £100 upon study completion.
  • Be provided with all food and drinks for 6 days per week, over 4 weeks.

All about the study

We are looking for healthy adults who are willing to:

  1. Take part in a 5-week trial that will involve a 4-week intervention period (whereby the study will provide all the meals you will be consuming for six days a week).
  2. Provide blood, urine, and stool samples on two occasions.
  3. Have an ultra-sound of the artery in your arm on two occasions.

You may be eligible if you can answer “yes” to the following statements:

  • I am aged 30-70y
  • I am willing to take part in a 5-week trial and follow the meal plan provided for 4 weeks
  • I am willing to answer questionnaires about my physical and mental health
  • I am willing to provide blood, urine, and stool samples on two occasions
  • I have NO history of chronic medical conditions
  • I am not pregnant, lactating or planning pregnancy during the next 6 months
  • I am willing to limit my alcohol consumption to a maximum of four glasses of white wine or light beer only a week
  • I am willing to consume animal products as part of the meal plan provided

What does the study involve?

If you take part, we will ask you to consume three daily meals, as well as snacks, that we will provide to you for 4 weeks. These meals are designed to help us understand how diet may support gut and cardiometabolic health. You will be able to consume your own food and meals one day a week.

We will ask you to provide stool samples to assess the bacteria living in your gut, and also urine (24h collection) and blood samples to assess key compounds (metabolites) that may be influenced by diet and mediate potential benefits of the study diets. We will also assess your cardiovascular health by taking an ultrasound of your artery in your arm. We will also ask you to fill out questionnaires on your bowel habits, gut symptoms, and mental health, and keep a food diary throughout the study.

Overall, you will attend three in-person study visits at King’s College London, Waterloo, SE1 9NH.

Benefits of taking part

  • You will be compensated £100 for completion of the study.
  • You will receive free frozen meals and snacks for 4 weeks.
  • Contribute to science by helping us answer an important question on the benefits of plant food.

Aims

Nutrition plays an important role in maintaining our cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health, with evidence showing that consuming plant foods could provide health benefits. With this study, we want to better understand how diets containing plant foods may affect our cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health.
