Women and Health Security - the Soteria Initiative

Adolescent girls and women bear disproportionate health and social risks when faced with complex emergencies and conflict. These risks pertain to issues as diverse as sexual and gender-based violence, post-traumatic stress, lack of post-exposure HIV and sexually transmitted disease prophylaxis, management of neglected tropical diseases, access to contraception and safe abortion, routine antenatal, intrapartum and newborn care, management of pregnancy and postpartum complications and newborn health. Around the world, over 160 million AGWs are exposed to insecurity and conflict today. 61% of preventable maternal mortality occurred in 35 crisis-affected countries (around 500 deaths per day)

Our research program focuses on a digitally-secure, user-friendly mobile health (mHealth) clinical record, that incorporates real-time guidance (an eRegistry), in a form that informs administrative staff about performance and outcomes, with associated low-cost diagnostic tools. The Soteria eRegistry-based modular toolkit for the care of AGWs will be focussed on Sexual and Reproductive Maternal and Neonatal Health.  The Soteria initiative has 4 phases: (i) add decision algorithms into a generic mHealth clinical record of open-access modules and decision trees (Soteria eRegistry); (ii) adapt generic eRegistry content to local contexts and integrate with local health management information systems; (iii) develop Soteria toolkit integrating bespoke eRegistries with point-of-care diagnostics and devices; (iv) pilot test toolkit in conflict settings.
