Research & Impact

Our research

Our research activities are focused on two thematic areas, namely cardiac biomedicine and vascular biomedicine. There is a major focus on cellular and molecular signalling, which cuts across and integrates these two themes.

Our focus is the mechanisms and treatment of cardiovascular disease, with a mission to:

  • Pursue internationally leading laboratory-to-bedside research programmes that address fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal cardiovascular function.
  • Link these to translational research that improves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human cardiovascular disease.
  • Undertake high quality research training for non-clinical and clinical scientists.

Research funding

The Cardiovascular Division currently receives research grant funding of approximately £37M. Our funding comes from:

- UK Research Councils (MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC)

- Charities (British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust, Diabetes UK, Oak Foundation, Fondation Leducq)

- The NIHR comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre

- The European Commission and industry
