The NIHR Health & Social Care Workforce Research Unit is core funded by the NIHR Policy Research Programme.

This page provides an overview of current PRP work at the Unit, together with recently completed work conducted by the Unit's predecessor at King's, the Social Care Workforce Research Unit (2002-2018).

The impact of COVID-19 on people who work as social care Personal Assistants

This study, led by Dr John Woolham, is exploring the personal impact of COVID-19 on Personal Assistants and their families, and on attitudes to working in this role. Project page.

Accessibility of section 12 approved doctors

This study, led by Dr Martin Stevens, is examining the availability of section 12 approved doctors for Mental Health Act assessments in the light of recommendations made in Professor Sir Simon Wessely's 2018 review of the Mental Health Act 1983. Project page.

Longitudinal Care Work Study

This study, which was initiated in 2008, is a major ongoing project at the Unit. Its aim is to increase understanding of the factors that facilitate or constrain recruitment and retention in the social care workforce in England. Project page

This secondary analysis of survey responses utilises unique and rich data on job characteristics of social workers in England. Project page

Personal Assistants and Personal Budgets

This study aims to achieve a better understanding of the Personal Assistant role in order to inform policy-makers and the wider social care sector. Project page

Consultation on the social care recruitment and retention strategy

The main focus of this study is an exploration of the value of the Workforce Strategy, in particular in evidencing the difference the strategy has made for the social care sector, in order to support policy development and plans for recruitment and retention in social care, post 2017, taking account of more integrated working between social care and health. Supporting carers following the implementation of the Care Act 2014: eligibility, support and prevention

The Care Act 2014 gave carers in England new rights to assessment of their needs and clarified their entitlements to public care and support. It aimed to make support for carers more consistent and accessible. The study aims to investigate whether and how these aspirations are being achieved, and which strategies are most effective. Helping or hindering in adult safeguarding: an investigation of practice

This study examined whether individuals are hindeing safeguarding enquiries, investigations and safeguarding interventions in relation to community-dwelling adults and the range of safeguarding responses. Project page

The Department of Health commissioned SCWRU to conduct an evidence review on the effectiveness of social work with adults to help inform Lyn Romeo's work. Project page

Secondary data analysis of the NMDS-SC

We have been conducting secondary analysis of the NMDS-SC to provide up-to-date information on a large sample of care workers. Project page

Serious Case Reviews in adult protection: guidance and development

This ongoing study explores the use of Serious Case Reviews in adult services in order to make recommendations for policymakers and practitioners and other stakeholders. Project page

Developing an adult Safeguarding Outcomes Measure for inclusion in the Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework

This project developed a standardised survey for councils to use with adults at risk to gain feedback about their experiences of safeguarding investigations. Project page

Checking care workers: a scoping review of the international evidence

The aim of this project is to describe the procedures, aims and outcomes of such activity in other countries (including other UK countries); identify evidence on the value of different approaches taken; and draw out messages for English policy and practice in respect of recruitment checks and referrals to regulatory or other bodies. Effectiveness of social work with adults: The Department of Health has commissionned SCWRU to conduct an evidence review on the effectiveness of social work with adults to help inform the work of Lyn Romeo (Chief Social Worker for Adults). Project page

Secondary data analysis of GSCC data: SCWRU was given access to the anonymous data records held by the GSCC before most of its functions were transferred to the Health and Care Professions Council. Project page
