Course overview

Undergraduate Summer School modules are intellectually stimulating, dynamic and highly participative. They are taught by leading King’s academics who are experts in their field. Classes are highly international with students from all over the world.

Each module comprises 150 study hours, including teaching, independent study and group work. Our undergraduate modules are examined to university standards and can be taken for credit towards degrees at other institutions.

This module is based on a 15-credit King’s undergraduate module and therefore typically awarded 3-4 US credits or 7.5 ECTS. To receive credit for King's summer modules, contact your home institution to ask them to award external credit.

What does this course cover?

This course uses a communicative approach in practicing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students discover Spanish in context via videos, articles and audio recordings and engage in interactive language activities and discussion. This course will increase the students’ understanding and appreciation of the different customs, cultural aspects and diversity of the societies and linguistics of the regions and countries where Spanish is spoken globally.

A range of cultural and linguistic workshops will be offered as additional activities for students to develop further their intercultural competence in Spanish. This course will cover A1 level (Beginners) in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the module, you should have:

  • gained the ability to communicate in everyday situations using the four language skills;
  • acquired basic grammatical knowledge and range of vocabulary;
  • ability to understand and use everyday expressions;
  • been enabled to produce short simple texts and to read, assess and analyse short, simple texts;
  • the ability to objectively compare aspects of various cultures by using the tools of intercultural learning.

Who is this for?

This module is aimed at students who want to brush up their Spanish at Beginner level (A1) and get ahead start on the next level A2; students who want to strengthen and review their language skills (at A1 level) before moving to the next level (A2).

The King's College London Undergraduate Summer School is open to students who are currently, or have been, enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme. We also welcome applications from professionals who have substantial relevant experience in their chosen subject area. The course is also open to King's Alumni.

How will I be assessed?

  • A collaborative and interactive presentation in Spanish (15-20 minutes)

What is the teaching schedule?

Undergraduate Summer School modules comprise 150 study hours over three weeks, which includes a minimum of 45 hours contact hours, as well as independent study, team project work and assessment preparation.

Teaching takes place between 9am and 5pm (BST) from Monday to Friday in one of our central London campuses. Students will receive their module timetable before they arriving on campus in June 2022.

We hope you will be able to study with us in person this summer and look forward to meeting you on campus. However if you are unable to travel to London, we are able to offer online teaching via our hyflex system which enables students to join the live classes remotely. This module can be taken as a residential programme. The residential module fee is £2288. Students on the residential programme can check into accommodation on the day prior to the start date (Sunday) and will check out on the day after the course ends (Saturday).
