The Department of AI & Personalised Health brings together expertise in AI, digital innovation, clinical science and population health to develop more effective, equitable and personalised approaches to prevention, care and wellbeing. We work with health systems, communities, industry and international partners to improve health across the life course, in London and around the world. The Department is home to more than 40 academic and research staff and holds more than £38 million in research grants across AI and personalised health, supported by funders including the Wellcome Trust, the European Union and philanthropic donors.
Our Research Groups
Using responsible AI and rich health data—from medical records, wearables, smartphones and other monitoring technologies—we generate new insights into health and disease. We turn these insights into practical, human-centred solutions that help individuals, families and professionals make better-informed decisions:
- Clinical decision support systems that help patients, carers and clinicians with diagnosis, treatment choice and identifying the patients at greatest risk
- Wearable- and smartphone-enabled monitoring that turns everyday data into earlier warning and more continuous care
- Lifestyle medicine, including personalised, evidence-based physical activity and exercise interventions that support healthier behaviours and help prevent and manage disease
Our work is grounded in rigorous clinical, population health and data science research. We use methods ranging from large observational studies and early-stage feasibility work to full clinical trials, alongside the development of new research methods. This evidence supports the safe, effective and equitable use of digital health technologies in everyday care.
King’s Population Health Institute
The Department serves as an anchor for the King’s Population Health Institute, strengthening collaboration across research, education, policy and practice to address major population health challenges.
EMBRACE: AI-supported care for mothers and babies
The Department hosts EMBRACE—Enhanced Maternal and Baby Results with AI-supported Care and Empowerment—a programme using clinical and digital health data from a global cohort to develop a personalised understanding of health during pregnancy and the first 1,000 days of life. EMBRACE will develop and evaluate a health assistant that combines AI with human clinical expertise to provide tailored support for mothers, babies and families.
Study with us
The Department leads and delivers the new Master of Digital Health (MDH) degree, equipping the next generation of leaders with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to shape the future of AI, data science and healthcare. We also welcome PhD, Master’s and undergraduate students with interests in AI, digital and personalised health. [PhD opportunities in the Department]
