The Department of Community & Health Systems Science brings together expertise in public health, health systems, implementation science and community-based research. We work with local authorities, communities, health and care systems, policymakers, civil society and international partners to understand and address the social, cultural and structural drivers of health and inequalities across the life course. Our work is grounded in prevention, equity and co-development, using theory-based live evaluation, data-enabled research and clear pathways to impact. Flagship platforms, including the Applied Research Collaboration, a national cardiovascular disease prevention consortium and the Determinants of Adolescent Social Well-being and Health (DASH) longitudinal cohort study, support the translation of evidence into policy and practice and the implementation of effective approaches at scale.
The Department hosts the King’s Global Health Institute, a hub for cross-faculty, transdisciplinary collaboration which works reciprocally through long-standing academic partnerships in over 15 countries in Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean bridging biomedicine and health justice. It also hosts King’s Global Health Partnerships, which strengthen health systems and improve quality of care through sustained partnerships in Somaliland, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, The Gambia and Kenya.
Our research-led education includes online and campus-based postgraduate programmes in Public Health and Global Health, including MPH, MSc in Public Health, MSc in Global Health and intercalated BSc in Global Health, alongside doctoral training through the LISS-ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership and Global Health Innovations. Together, our research, education and partnerships develop future leaders and generate practical, scalable and equitable solutions to strengthen prevention, health systems and population health locally and globally.
