The Department of Primary Care & Data Science brings together internationally recognised expertise in primary care, artificial intelligence, data science, statistics, health economics and stroke research to address some of the most pressing challenges facing healthcare today.
Our mission is to generate evidence that improves the health of individuals and populations, informs policy and transforms clinical practice. By combining methodological excellence with strong partnerships across the NHS, academia, industry and the public sector, we develop innovative approaches that enable better prevention, diagnosis, treatment and delivery of healthcare.
Our researchers work across the full spectrum of translational research, from developing new analytical methods and AI technologies to evaluating interventions in real-world healthcare settings. We believe that advances in data science and artificial intelligence achieve their greatest impact when developed alongside clinicians, patients, policymakers and health systems, ensuring that innovation translates into meaningful improvements in health outcomes.

Our Research Groups
Education and Training
The Department is committed to developing the next generation of researchers, clinicians and data scientists. We offer an outstanding environment for postgraduate education, doctoral training and continuing professional development, providing opportunities to work alongside world-leading researchers on projects with real-world impact.
We are closely linked with the EPSRC DRIVE-Health Centre for Doctoral Training. Our staff teach on programmes including Master of Public Health, MSc in Global Health, and the forthcoming MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Health, and Master of Digital Health.
By integrating methodological excellence with practical application, we equip our students and trainees with the skills needed to lead innovation across healthcare, research and industry.
