About

Aniko Horvath joined the School of Education, Communication and Society at King’s College London in March 2014 to conduct research on inequalities, identities, and academic values in the UK’s higher education sector.

Prior to coming to King’s Aniko worked as a researcher in large European Union FP6 and FP7 research programs for the University of Bristol, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Nationalism Studies Department of the Central European University. During 2010 and 2011 she was a Visiting Tutor at the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Between 1999 and 2002 she worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Journalism and Communication at the Babes-Bolyai University (Cluj, Romania), teaching courses in media theory and practice. From 1997 to 1999 she led seminars in media theory and practice as a Teaching Assistant in the same department at Babes-Bolyai.

Aniko holds a PhD from the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology of the Central European University (Budapest, Hungary) and an MA in Nationalism Studies from the same university. She has an Advanced Studies graduate diploma in Socio- and Psycho-Pedagogy and a BA in Journalism from Babes-Bolyai University.

Aniko has extensive work experience as a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and NGO project manager in Romania, Hungary, and the United States. Most of her work in these sectors focused on inequalities as they manifest themselves over time and in the fields of education, housing, employment and welfare.

 

Current Research

My current research at KCL seeks to understand the impact on academic values and identities of key institutional and policy changes that have taken place in higher education in the UK over the past decades, and more specifically, since the 2010 restructuring of the sector. I am interested in how the academic community has mobilized economic, social, and cultural resources to cope with such changes, how academics make sense of their past and present professional lives and, in turn, how these understandings and interpretations inform their everyday coping strategies in academia.

Academic Research Background
A significant part of Aniko’s earlier research – and her PhD in particular – took an ethnographic approach to examine the lives of people and families that have, for decades, faced precarious livelihoods and impoverishment in Eastern and Central Europe. Her doctoral thesis was an exploration of processes that determined the social production and reproduction of inequalities and brought about social change under successive government regimes prior to, during, and after Communism in urban Romania. It offered an historical account of the ways in which successive generations of individual families were affected by the political and economic changes over the decades, and the ways in which individuals and families mobilized their resources attempting to create more secure lives. Through the lens of how struggles for housing and land conditioned people’s lives and brought about or eased poverty over time, Aniko examined the various ways in which people have been able to create or seize ‘openings’ in structures of power and thus shape the ‘time-spaces’ of their lives. At the same time, by analysing urban property relations, her research uncovered the ways in which layers of inequalities have, for decades, been produced and superimposed upon local actors in urban Romania, often deterring and limiting their efforts to “get by” in their everyday lives.

Aniko’s MA thesis for the Nationalism Studies Department at the Central European University focused on the state-financed affirmative action programs for Roma people in Romanian public universities. The research examined the factors that influence identity switching and the development of situational identities among Roma students, and analysed statistical data about Roma students’ socio-economic and educational backgrounds in order to better understand drop-out rates and the paths the professional lives of these students were taking. The findings of Aniko’s research were pioneering in Romania, and pointed to many breakdowns and gaps in state policy. In the hope of correcting some of these problems the Roma Education Fund in Budapest, with Aniko’s collaboration, designed a national level representative survey on the impacts of affirmative action policies. The findings of this national survey were published by the organization and a list of policy recommendations were submitted to the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research.
