Biography

I'm a climate scientist, specialising in testing and assessing uncertainties for climate models, especially for the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet contributions to future sea level rise. I talk to the public about climate change in the media, on my blog and Twitter, and at public events.

Research interests
  • Predictions for ice sheets and sea level rise and the effect on coastal flooding
  • How to use information about recent and palaeoclimates to improve predictions of the future
  • Calibrating computationally expensive computer models
  • Emulation (statistical modelling of computer models: a.k.a. surrogate modelling, meta-modelling)

I talk to the public about climate change through a variety of channels. Some of my activities include:

I have advised institutions on science communication, including the Met Office, Royal Society, and the Association for Science and Discovery Centres. I have provided advice on science and science communication to the Government Office for Science (see Publications) and the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology (advisor for several briefing papers for MPs), and the UK Climate Projections 2018. I am a contributing author of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.
