Dr Thomas Dowling

Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Bush House NE Wing

I studied Physical Geography at Durham University (UK), before moving on to a masters in Environmental Science: GIS and Remote Sensing at the University of Cambridge (UK). I completed my PhD at Lund University (Sweden) in February 2016 and am now based in London. I specialise in environmental analysis via remote platforms and enjoy solving spatially related problems in innovative and new ways. The main tools used are the ESRI Arc suites, the OSGeo suites, ENVI Imagine, Matlab/R, AgisoftPhotoscan and the Spyder scientific programming environment (python).

Research interests

My broad research interest is the application of geographical information system (GIS), earth observation and machine learning techniques to environmental and human problems. My current research focus is to apply machine learning techniques to geospatial data - be that crop yields, satellite data downscaling or the flow of ice over land. Additional research activities are ongoing in the fields of pesticide environmental fate modelling and geospatial intelligence techniques.

PhD supervision topics
  • GIS and remote sensing
  • Glacial geology
  • Geospatial machine learning
