Sergey Soloviev Medal 2016 awarded to Geography Alumna

The Department of Geography is delighted to learn that KCL PhD Alumna, Professor Irasema Alcántara-Ayala (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM) has recently received the European Geosciences Union prestigious Sergey Soloviev Medal 2016.
Professor Alcántara-Ayala completed a geography/geomorphology PhD at KCL with Professor John B. Thornes in 1997. Her thesis topic was: "Modelling mass movement risk under semi-arid mountainous conditions: the Alpujarride Complex, Spain". Irasema continues to collaborate with the Department through the CIRRR research hub.
The 2016 Sergey Soloviev Medal was awarded to Professor Alcántara-AyalaI for her outstanding contribution to the basic knowledge of natural hazards, vulnerability and prevention of disasters in developing countries. It was presented to her by the EGU Natural Hazard Division president, Giorgio Boni, in a ceremony attended by over 100 people, including members of the Department.
