King's Centre for Risk Management

Policy Engagement

Our research has made major contributions to the development of risk both an academic field of study and a body of policy-relevant know-how. This concern for and impact upon policy and practice is a defining feature of our research, which has benefited from close collaborations with industry and government agencies. KCRM staff serve in a wide variety of advisory capacities to government. For example, Professor Ragnar Lofstedt is an advisor to the European Food Safety Authority and in 2011 was appointed by HM Government to lead an 8-month long Independent Review of Health and Safety Regulation . Dr Michael Howard is a member of the Social Science Research Committee of the UK Food Standards Agency.

Past research partners and clients include HM Government, British Energy, UK Food Standards Agency, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, IRSN, US Department of Homeland Security, Pfizer, European Food Safety Authority, DEFRA and the UK Health & Safety Executive, among others.

KCRM runs regular ‘Risk Forums’ to bring academics and practitioners together. In 2010, KCRM hosted the Society for Risk Analysis – Europe annual conference on ‘Risk, Governance & Accountability’ which attracted 300 participants from around the world.
