Risk and Society: Research Themes

Our research is focused around three interlinked themes:

Natural and Environmental Health Hazards
Risk Regulation and Governance
Risk Perception and Communication

Working closely with other research groups across the Department, the Risk and Society Group is distinctive for our ability to synthesize and span divisions between the natural and social sciences and for applying that know-how beyond Europe and North America to developing countries as well.

Group members enjoy close working relationships with both policy-makers and businesses, and are currently involved in research projects funded by the ESRC, British Academy, NERC DEFRA, DfID, Home Office, and the European Commission as well as a number of leading international firms.

As well as contributing to a range of masters programmes in the Department, in particular the MSc in Risk Analysis, group members are also heavily involved in our thriving doctoral programme, which attracts graduates from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds from across the world.

If you are interested in potential PhD study, you may contact one of our staff members, either with your own topic idea or in relation to one of the potential projects. The Group are also open to motivated and dynamic researchers wishing to explore possibilities for Fellowship or visiting researcher positions.
