Professor Chris Hamnett, Department of Geography, attended the Astana Economic Forum 2013 in Kazakhstan.  His panel was entitled 'Transition to Green Civilization' and the goal was o make recommendations on the expansion of the scope of research and education for “green” economy in developed and transit countries on the basis of the discussion of international experience and country development programmes.

Professor Hamnett considers one of the most interesting thing about the conference was the presence of the economic great and good clustered in one place. There was a bevy of former prime ministers, nobel prize winners, heads of UN and international agencies like the World Bank and the IMF. The conference provided an excellent opportunity both to listen to these speakers and to interact with them socially.
