Impact, Innovation and Outreach

Impact, Innovation and Outreach

The Department of Geography welcomes collaboration with industry, government and civil society – internationally, from within the UK and London. For information on how to build linkages with the Department’s research strengths please contact Professor Mark Pelling.

Impact culture

The range and scale of impact delivered through the Department of Geography matches our recognised research excellence, touching the intimate and everyday, alongside the strategic and global. Impact on non-academic communities is built into the design of individual research projects. More than this, impact arises from our research culture, one of service to society. Long-standing relationships between key individuals and communities lie at the heart of this culture, one where academic work can hold itself as a critical friend to existing actors – including those with marginal voices. It is in these relationships, new as well as established, that research priorities are formulated, methodologies developed and findings disseminated so that research is inherently as well as instrumentally coproduced.

Key partners in building impact include

  • International civil society – especially developmental and environmental non-governmental organisations and the UN family.
  • The European Union and its component agencies.
  • National government departments and agencies, including those from overseas governments.
  • Local actors – community groups, local government and business

Managing impact and outreach

Impact and outreach are the responsibilities of individual researchers and articulated through individual projects. Support for building new relationships between academics and research users is provided by the Department Research Committee and through its four Research Groups, as well as associated networks. Collaboration reaches into our teaching as well as research activity with research users frequently involved in the codesign of masters as well as PhD level research projects.
