Like the research conducted within the department more generally, research is often international in focus and involves collaboration with partners in government and industry.

Recent research projects have been supported by competitive funding from the ESRC, NERC and the European Commission, among others, and led to important shifts in policy, such as the 2005 Hampton Review of administrative burdens on business and the 2012 Lofstedt Review of health & safety regulation
