Biography

Gry Wester is Lecturer in Bioethics and Global Health Ethics at the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at King’s College London. She is the Acting Director of the Bioethics & Society’s Master’s Programme. She is also an Associate Editor for BMC Medical Ethics.

Prior to joining King’s, Dr Wester held Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Global Health Priorities Research Group at the University of Bergen and with the Montreal Health Equity Research Consortium at McGill University. She holds degrees from Trinity College Dublin (BA), University College London (MPhil, philosophy), and the University of Oslo (PhD, philosophy). She has also been a Caroline Miles Visiting Fellow at the Ethox Centre at the University of Oxford.

Dr Wester’s training is in political philosophy. She has a long-standing interest in the intersection of political philosophy and public policy: applying the tools of analytic philosophy to address real-world policy challenges, and using insights from practice to inform theory. The focus of her research is distributive justice and the application of theories of equality to questions concerning health, in particular in relation to health inequality and public health policy. Other central research interests include the capability approach, priority setting in health and social care and conscientious objection in health care.
