The seminar series is coordinated by Dr Thomas Rid, Reader in the Department of War Studies and a non-resident fellow at the School for Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, in Washington, DC.


A conversation on the rise and fall of counterinsurgency, with Lt-Gen Jonathon Riley and Professor Theo Farrell.

This seminar brings academic and practitioner perspectives to bear on the thorny question of counterinsurgency and the Afghanistan war. Professor Theo Farrell of the Dept of War Studies, has been studying the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) campaign for many years under his ESRC research fellowship. Prof. Farrell has evaluated the campaign at the strategic, operational and tactical levels for the British Army and for ISAF Command. Prof. Theo Farrell will be in discussion about his research with Lt. Gen. Jonathon Riley, former Deputy Commander of ISAF from 2007-08. Lt. Gen. Riley holds a PhD, has published 10 books on military history, and is a visiting professor in War Studies.
