Professor Ronald Barston is an international relations and contemporary diplomacy specialist, with particular interests in diplomatic methods, foreign policy management and international economic relations .

He is a former member of the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office . Previously he taught at University of Lancaster ( International Relations ) ; London School of Economics ( International Relations ; Diplomacy and Director Marine Policy programme ); Reading (Contemporary Diplomacy); in Italy and United States. In addition served as a UK reserve officer ( decorated TD ) .

His extensive diplomatic and training mission experience includes as a World Bank consultant in Malaysia (National Institute of Public Administration ); Brunei ; Vietnam; Jamaica and Trinidad .

Research Interests include 

  • Maritime EEZ management; environment; international maritime regulations. 

  • Diplomatic methods

  • Foreign policy management

  • International economic relations 


He teaches the BA Diplomacy module to final year students


His book publications include The Other Powers; Maritime Dimension; International Politics Since 1945 and Modern Diplomacy (4th ed Taylor and Francis.) Fifth edition is currently in preparation .
