Professional background and areas of interest
John Woolham joined SCWRU in December 2015 from Coventry University, where he had worked since 2009. Prior to Coventry he worked for many years as a social care researcher in local government.
John’s research interests include the application of assistive technology and telecare to support the independence and well-being of older people and people with dementia, personalisation and personal budgets in social care, and social care research ethics and governance. While at Coventry University John led a major project on personalisation and older people (funded by NIHR School for Social Care Research) and was part of a research team investigating risk and personalisation. He has considerable experience of mixed methods studies, including a randomised controlled trial of technology and its use by people with dementia.
John is co-editor of Research, Policy and Planning, the journal of the Social Services Research Group, and an elected member of SSRG’s Executive Committee.
Within the Unit, John leads the NIHR Policy Research Programme work on personal assistants and a NIHR SSCR funded study on telecare. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Assistive Technology and a member of the British Society of Gerontology, serves on Warwickshire County Council’s Research Governance Board, and is an associate member of the Association of Directors of Social Services Research Group.
John is a Fellow of the NIHR School for Social Care Research.
