School of Security Studies

Understanding security challenges in an increasingly uncertain world

The need has never been greater to understand the changing global security landscape with the rise of Daesh, sophisticated terrorist attacks in urban locations globally, Iranian nuclear ambitions, the increasing threat of cyber attacks, the resurgence of Russia, the growth of China’s influence and questions surrounding the defence and security implications of Brexit.

We are the largest community of scholars in the world dedicated to the research and teaching of all aspects of security - contemporary and historical, theoretical and empirical. Our research directly informs academic and policy debates in the UK and internationally. We are committed to providing a unique education experience for all of our students both in London in the Department of War Studies, and in the Defence Studies Department at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Defence Academy of the UK.

Through multiple modes of delivery - undergraduate, postgraduate, executive, residential, distance and blended - our teaching programmes equip students with the intellectual tools to expand and enhance their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of conflict, defence and security.
