Welcoming spring to Strand Campus

Planters on the strand campus (1)

We've welcomed a touch of spring to our Strand campus with our new planters at the entrance of the Strand building. These bright, seasonal planters not only add colour and life to one of our most visible buildings but also support our ongoing commitment to improving biodiversity and sustainability across King’s.

Filled with pollinator-friendly plants and complete with bug hotels, the planters bring a burst of spring energy right into the heart of the Strand alongside the pedestrianised zone. They work in harmony with the surrounding landscape to soften the urban environment and create a more inviting place for staff, students, and visitors to pause and enjoy nature.

The planters also introduce several sustainability features that support our wider goals, including an integrated Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS), air-filtering evergreen and seasonal planting, recycled aggregate mulches, and small micro habitats. Together, these elements will help boost urban wildlife while making everyday moments on campus feel a little greener.

These planters serve multiple purposes for us at King's. Not only are they providing a welcoming frontage to one of our most iconic campuses, but they are also helping us to further embed biodiversity and sustainability into the everyday experience of our staff, students and visitors– Sara Kassam, Director of Sustainability, Estates and Facilities

This new addition to the Strand building has meant some of our incredible alumni featured on the windows are not as visible. We are considering how we can better marry these two important features together and would value your opinion. Let us know your thoughts on what you’d like to see in this space by completing this short questionnaire.

By enhancing building exteriors and open spaces, we aim to bring nature closer to the King’s community throughout the year.
