Study Portuguese and choose from a variety of study options ranging from the medieval to the contemporary, on literature, linguistics, art, history, popular music, film, theatre and translation.  

We offer the following pathway options:

You can study these options either post A-Level or as a total beginner (ab initio). Find out more about these pathways and our available modules below.

Joint Honours

If you are studying Portuguese and English, History, or Philosophy, or studying Portuguse and another language (ie Modern Languages (Spanish and Portuguese) with a year abroad BA), you'll study the following Portuguese modules:

Required Modules

  • Cultural Transformations: An Introduction to Modern Languages (15 credits)
  • Post-A Level Portuguese

  • Portuguese Language 1A (30 credits)
  • Global Iberias: Perspectives - Introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits)
  • Ab initio Portuguese

  • Introductory Portuguese (30 credits)
  • Global Iberias: Perspectives - Introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits)
  • Please note, if you are studying two languages as part of your degree, you will be able to take an additional 15 credit optional module. This can be either as another optional module in either of the languages you're studying OR by taking a new language as a beginner via our Modern Languages Centre . Options include Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and many more.

    Required Modules

    Post-A Level Portuguese

  • Portuguese Language 2 (30 credits)
  • Ab initio Portuguese

  • Intermediate Portuguese (30 credits)
  • Please note, if you studied a module with the Modern Languages Centre in your first year, you can continue this in year 2 to replace one 15 credit module.

    Optional Modules

    You will take 30 credits of Portuguese optional modules in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies from a range that may typically include:

  • Nineteenth Century Fiction in Brazil and Portugal (15 credits)
  • Visuality, Literature and Modern Life in Latin America (15 credits)
  • Fatherlands: Spain and Portugal under the Dictators (15 credits)
  • Imperial Visions in Iberian Literature (15 credits)
  • Introduction to the Study of Language with Special Reference to Spanish and Portuguese (15 credits)
  • Assessment for this year will depend on whether you split the year between two different language speaking countries (dual language pathway students),or spend the entire year in a single language speaking country. It will also depend on how you opt to spend your year: as an exchange student at a university, a language assistant teaching English (currently not available in Portuguese speaking-countries), or on an approved work placement (one semester only).

  • Brazilian Poetry and Song: 1958 to the present (15 credits)
  • Topics in Afro-Brazilian Culture (15 credits)
  • Cross-Cultural Exchanges between Africa and the Americas, 16th-20th Centuries (15 credits)
  • Comparing Romance Languages: Historical Evolution and Linguistic Interference (15 credits)
  • Peripheral Europeans: Modernity, Traditionalism and National Identity (15 credits)
  • Maximising Performance: Brecht, Boal and Big Business (15 credits)
  • EU and Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Greece (15 credits)
  • Composition in Portuguese (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (15 credits)
