Study Spanish and take the opportunity to immerse yourself in all aspects of Spanish and Hispanic language, literature and cultural history at a world-class university in the heart of London.  

You will be able to study a range of options from medieval and early modern studies to modern literatures and cultures from Spain and Latin America. You’ll graduate with the skills in linguistic expertise and cultural awareness that are so much in demand in today's job market. 

We offer the following pathway options:

You can study these either post A-Level or as a total beginner (ab initio). Find out more about these pathways and our available modules below.

Modern Languages (Spanish) with a year abroad BA

Required Modules

  • Spanish Language I (30 credits)
  • Global Iberias: Perspectives - An Introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits)
  • Global Iberias: Themes - Rethinking the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits)
  • Optional Modules

    You will then select further Spanish modules in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies to bring your total credits to 120 for the year from a range of optional modules, that may typically include:

  • Image: Visual Culture in the Global Iberias (15 credits)
  • Music of the Lusophone & Hispanic Worlds (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Modern Hispanic Culture (15 credits)
  • From Frontier to Empire: Cultures in Contact in the Medieval & Early Modern Iberian Worlds (15 credits)
  • You may replace one 15-credit optional module with a module in the Modern Language Centre in another language at credit level 4.

    You may also, with approval, select 15 credits at credit level 4 from outside the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.

    You will take 90 credits from a range of Spanish optional modules from the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, that may typically include:

  • Memory in Modern Spanish Culture (15 credits)
  • Language Acts and Worldmaking in Medieval and Early Modern Spain (15 credits)
  • Introduction to the Study of Language with Special Reference to Spanish and Portuguese (15 credits)
  • Imperial Visions in Iberian Literature (15 credits)
  • Marketing the Margins: Case Studies in the Literary Marketplace (15 credits)
  • The Study of Gender in Spanish American Literature and Culture (15 credits)
  • Visuality, Literature and Modern Life in Latin America (15 credits)
  • Fatherlands: Spain and Portugal under the Dictators (15 credits)
  • Catalan Language & Culture (15 credits)
  • Spain in the World (15 credits)
  • Nationalism in Spain (15 credits)
  • You may replace one 15-credit optional module with a module in the Modern Language Centre in another language at credit level 5.

    You may also, with approval, select 15 credits at credit level 5 from outside the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Alternatively, you may replace up to 30 credits of Spanish modules with Portuguese modules offered by the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies.

    Assessment for this year will depend on how you opt to spend your year: as an exchange student at a university, a language assistant teaching English, or on an approved work placement (one semester only).

  • Myth & Archive: 19th & 20th Century Rewritings on Colonial Latin America (15 credits)
  • Images of Spain: Stereotypes in Spanish Cinema (15 credits)
  • The Writer and the Public: Journalism in Spain (15 credits)
  • Key Terms and Points of View in Latin American Visual Arts (15 credits)
  • Cross-Cultural Exchanges between Africa and the Americas, 16th-20th Centuries (15 credits)
  • History & Imagination in 19th Century Spanish Narrative (15 credits)
  • Comparing Romance Languages: Historical Evolution and Linguistic Interference (15 credits)
  • Sefarad: The Jews of Medieval Spain in Literary History and Cultural Memory (15 credits)
  • Catalan Culture (15 credits)
  • Advanced Catalan Language (15 credits)
  • EU and Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Greece (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (15 credits)
  • You may replace one 15-credit optional module with a module in the Modern Language Centre in another language at credit level 6.

    You may also, with approval, select 15 credits at credit level 6 from outside the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Alternatively, you may replace up to 30 credits of Spanish modules with Portuguese modules offered by the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies.

    Joint Honours

    If you are studying Spanish and English, History, or Philosophy, or studying Spanish and another language (ie Modern Languages (French and Spanish) with a year abroad BA), you'll study the following Spanish modules:

  • Please note, if you are studying two languages as part of your degree, you will be able to take an additional 15 credit optional modules. This can be as another optional module in either of the languages you re studying OR by taking a new language as a beginner via our Modern Languages Centre . Options include Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and many more.

    If you are studying joint honours Spanish & Portuguese you will also take:

  • Global Iberias Themes: Introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits)
  • alongside the relvant modules above.

    If you are studying Spanish and English, History, or Philosophy, or studying Spanish and another language (ie Modern Languages (French and Spanish) with a year abroad BA), you'll study the following Spanish modules:

    Please note, if you studied a module with the Modern Languages Centre in your first year, you can continue this in year 2 to replace one 15 credit module.

    You will take 30 credits of Spanish optional modules in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies from a range that may typically include:
