The Biological Physics Across Scales Centre for Doctoral Training (BiPAS CDT) at King's College London is a multi-disciplinary doctoral training programme in biological physics.
Our focus is to understand how complex macroscopic phenomena - observed at scales appropriate to tissue, organism, or even population - arise from mechanisms at the cellular, molecular, and atomic level. This programme will give students the tools and skills they need to integrate knowledge across different length and time scales to bring new understanding to the mechanisms underlying the physics of life.

This CDT is for physical scientists - physicists, chemists, mathematicians, and related disciplines - who are fascinated by the complexity of biological systems. All students will be co-supervised by a physical scientist and a life scientist for truly interdisciplinary training at the physics-biology interface. You will develop experimental and theoretical/computational methodologies to gain insight into fundamental unanswered questions in biology, in fields ranging from immunology to stem cell biology to neuroscience. Ultimately, you will be trained to work successfully across the boundaries of traditional disciplines, scales, and methodologies and bring your expertise and innovation skills into the thriving and expanding life sciences realm, both in academia and industry.

Entry requirements
Applicants must have or be predicted to obtain a BSc with first-class honours or upper division second-class honours (2:1), or a Master's degree with Merit or Distinction. Degrees must be in a physical sciences subject such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related discipline. Please contact us if you are unsure about whether your qualifications are suitable for admission to BiPAS.
International Requirements
Visit our admissions webpages to view our International entry requirements.
English Language Requirements
Visit our admissions webpages to view our English language entry requirements. The BiPAS programme falls within Band D.
Submit an online application via King's Apply. For 'Programme Name', enter 'CDT in Biological Physics Across Scales (BiPAS) (MPhil/PHD)'. Select date / week commencing: 1 October 2022. It is important that you select this programme of study and start date.
Please ensure that you read the ‘how to apply’ guidance document before you apply. Applications that do not follow the steps in the application guidance document will not be considered. Further information on the CDT can be found on the BiPAS CDT page.
Please upload a PDF of your personal statement that explains: (i) Why you want to join the BiPAS CDT at King’s College London; (ii) How your experience leading up to now has prepared you to pursue a PhD; and (iii) Your short-term and long-term career goals, and how a PhD in Biological Physics will help you to achieve them.
Please check the BiPAS pages for application deadlines.
If you don't have a suitable qualification for direct entry to a UK university, or if English isn't your first language, our academic preparation courses can help you get ready for study in the UK.
Studentship Award and Eligibility
All studentships are fully funded awards for 3.5 years and include tuition fees, stipend, and a research and training support grant (RTSG).
Tuition fees: Tuition fees will be fully covered by the BiPAS CDT studentship at the UK Tuition Fee rate for the duration of the funded period. In exceptional cases International Tuition Fees may be covered by a fee waiver.
Stipend: Students will receive a tax-free stipend at UKRI rates. For 2021/22, the stipend will be £17,609 per annum.
RTSG: A generous allowance will be provided for research-related costs, including consumables, attendance at UK and international conferences, and training.
Eligibility: Both UK and overseas students are eligible to apply. Studentships for international students will be limited in number and competitive, and we encourage strong international candidates to apply.
Visit the fees and funding webpages to find out more about bursaries, scholarships, grants, tuition fees, living expenses, student loans and other financial help available at King's.
As a Biophysics PhD student at King’s, I am taking an interdisciplinary approach to study mechanosensing in immune cells. I am particularly interested in how B lymphocyte activation is influenced by substrate rigidity, as well as antigen isotype, affinity and geometry, which is important for the rational design of new vaccines and immunotherapies.
