King’s also provides support via Student Services and your personal tutor. In addition, KCLSU can also help you navigate these support services whenever you need.

Mental Health

Whilst everyone says that university life is the best time of your life, it is completely normal to feel down, overwhelmed, anxious or unable to cope at times. Sometimes these feelings can persist for weeks or even months.

Your mental health is very important to us and our Welfare Lead Team are at your disposal to help you tackle any issues that may be impacting you, no matter how big or small, or what time of the day or year it comes up.

Bullying & Harassment

At times, living with flatmates can become challenging and start to seriously impact your wellbeing. It is important that you are able to recognise the difference between personality clashes, where an informal conversation or mediation via your Welfare Lead or CF can resolved, from actual bullying and/or harassment, which may require further action from you and the University.

We operate on a zero-tolerance basis to bullying and harassment and if your flatmates’ behaviour start to make you feel singled out, ganged up on or threatened, please speak to your Welfare Lead immediately as it’s really important to tackle such behaviours as early as possible.

Remember that bullying or harassment is unacceptable, and there are policies in place to protect you – you can find our more information here.

Alcohol & Drugs

Many of you may have decided or developed mechanisms to ensure you drink safely or avoid alcohol altogether – that’s great and we hope that many of you take this decision. Given that despite being legal, alcohol is a drug and you should be careful with the effects drinking has upon your body and mental state and how excessive drinking can also increase risks to your personal safety.

Alcohol is the UK’s favourite drug, and many people drink without it affecting them too much – apart from the odd hang over. However, abuse of alcohol and alcohol dependency can have a serious effect on your life and studying.

Other drugs may "produce" happiness or make you feel more relaxed or more "out there" but you should be aware of the negative effects of using drugs, as some can be irreversible. Also, because many drugs are also mixed with other ingredients, you can never be sure what you’re getting, and how that mixture will affect you – so what was fine for a friend may be fatal to you.

We have a legal obligation to ensure that drugs are not used on our premises and King’s operates a zero-tolerance approach to drugs. This means, that we will not allow you or your guests to be involved in illegal drug activities whilst on our residences – and that includes your bedroom. For more information on King's Drugs Policy, please click here.

If you need to talk in confidence to someone about your drug problem, or are struggling to cope with the effects a friend’s drug taking is having on you, please speak to one of the Welfare Lead or contact our Counselling Services. You will not be judged and they will help you find the next step to help you or a loved one or friend.
