Describing English Language is one of the foundational, compulsory first year modules in the BA English Language and Linguistics degree. It functions in this foundational role in conjunction with other first year modules, Language and Communication, Introduction to Sociolinguistics, and Analysing English 1.
Different people have taken different approaches to describing English. In this module, we will look at these different approaches and how they compare with one another. We will look at the sounds of language, word formation, grammar, vocabulary and the study of meaning. The module also introduces students to a range of tools for describing and analysing language. There will be coverage of the transcription of English and the use of different approaches and tools to identify patterns in language.
*Please note that although all module information is correct for the 2020/21 academic year, it is subject to change for subsequent academic years.
