Working Creatively with Digital Texts (Module)

Module description

When it has to analyse in detail reasonably long texts, the mind tires and is prone to error.  When this happens we miss things even in texts that we cherish.  Text analysis software never tires or misses a thing.  In this practically oriented module, you will appreciate the power of digital text analysis tools to illuminate things in reasonably long texts which may well lie under our fallible human radar, e.g., artful rhetorical devices employed in prized political speeches or the subtle craft of canonical short stories.  Significant software functions for the course are wordlists, collocates, concordances, keywords.  You will receive a solid grounding in how to use appropriate software to search through texts in digitised format on these functions.  The software you will be trained in is simple to learn and fun to use.
