This module is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the main arguments advanced in support of and against the development of commerce and luxury in modern political thought. These arguments were at the heart of political, moral and economic thought throughout the eighteenth century, and the debates to which they gave rise were central to the development of liberal political thought and capitalist political economy.
