This module studies the very recent past of the UK, applying an historical perspective to the period since 1997. It will study the rise and fall of prime ministers and political parties, and the changing nature of the Union and the system of government. Students will consider the economic and financial turbulence that occurred, the changing nature of the welfare state, and the role of the UK in wider global events such as the invasion of Iraq and the War on Terror. They will consider changes in the practice of UK politics, including the impact of the Internet. The module culminates in the vote to leave the European Union of June 2016, and its aftermath.
